Tagar or Indian valerian is recommended as a remedy for hysteria, hypochondria, nervousness, emotional tension, stress, and sleep disorders.
It is also used as a carminative and is part of Ayurvedic preparations. The root, powdered and mixed with sugar, is used for inflammation of the urinary tract. In Nepal, the plant decoction was given to women after childbirth as a calming and pain-relieving remedy, and the extract was used as a restorative with antibiotic properties. Testing the extract of valerian leaves on rats showed that the preparation has analgesic properties.
Tagar or Indian valerian is a tufted, hairy plant that grows in the middle part of the Himalayas. The roots of this plant have a pleasant smell, from which aromatic oil is produced, containing valerian acid. Indian valerian is similar in properties to medicinal valerian and is used for the same purposes. In India, dried valerian rhizome is used to make perfumes and hair care products, as incense, as an insect repellent, and to a lesser extent in medicine.
Usage: 1 tablet twice a day after meals, with water. Refrain from other medications for an hour after taking. (Dosage is for those over 14 years old).
