Manjistha churna is made from the plant Manjistha (Rubia cordifolia), a perennial mountain plant that is perhaps best known as a lymphatic blood purifier. According to Ayurveda, the lymph (rasa) and blood (rakta) are the first tissues to become overloaded when the body is not properly detoxified, and then it has a domino effect through the other five tissues of the body if not addressed properly at these early stages.

This model of the body's tissues in succession helps us understand why Ayurveda places such importance on maintaining a good flow of lymph. The lymph is the site of the immune system and has a profound influence on the healthy appearance and function of the skin as the body's largest detoxifying organ.

The preparation acts by "spreading" throughout all the body systems, most strongly affecting the arterial system, circulatory system, and skin. Its name literally means "bright red" because it has red roots, which, according to Ayurveda, are the plant's motor and cleansing ability. While other plants with red roots, including beets and Ceanothus americanus (also known as red root), are also highly valued as lymph cleansers, Manjistha is usually considered the most powerful in this group.

From the perspective of dhatus (body tissues), Manjistha pacifies pitta and eliminates excess kapha. Many imbalances related to pitta in the body, especially in the blood, can be supported by Manjistha's affinity for balancing pitta.

Since many menstrual problems are a result of congested lymph, Manjistha is an excellent support for the female reproductive system, especially in childhood.
